Apple Partners with Anthropic to Develop AI-Powered Coding Tool: Report

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Apple Inc is collaborating with AI startup Anthropic, which is backed by Amazon, on an artificial intelligence-based coding platform designed to write, edit, and test software, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The new platform, referred to as "vibe coding," involves AI agents generating code on behalf of developers.

The method is part of a growing trend in the AI community aimed at automating more aspects of software development.

According to the report, the tool is a revamped version of Apple’s Xcode software and will incorporate Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet large language model.

Anthropic declined to comment on the partnership.

Apple did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The report noted that Apple intends to use the system internally for now and has not yet decided whether to release it publicly.

Previously, Apple had announced Swift Assist, an AI-enabled tool for Xcode slated for release in 2024.

However, that tool was never launched, reportedly due to concerns among Apple engineers that it could hinder the speed of app development, Bloomberg added.

AI-powered coding assistants are becoming increasingly popular as companies race to integrate generative AI into development tools.

Bloomberg reported last month that OpenAI is in talks to acquire Windsurf, another AI-assisted coding tool, for approximately \$3 billion.

As competition intensifies in the generative AI space, Apple is forging more partnerships with AI firms and introducing enhanced on-device AI features.

The company has also been upgrading its hardware with more powerful chips capable of supporting advanced AI functions, such as integrating ChatGPT for user queries.

These efforts are part of Apple's broader strategy to remain competitive in the evolving AI landscape.
