3 Sentenced to Death for Role in 2022 Shiraz Terror Attack

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian court sentenced three defendants to capital punishment for their role in a fatal terrorist attack in October 2022 on the Shah-e Cheragh shrine in Iran’s southern city of Shiraz.

The Judiciary chief of Fars Province said on Sunday that a court has been hearing the case of seven main defendants since February.

Three perpetrators of the terrorist attack were convicted of corruption on earth and received the death penalty, Sadrollah Rajaeinasab said.

The provincial Judiciary chief noted that the three convicts were the masterminds and main elements of terrorist activities inside Iran.

He added that two other members of the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group involved in the attack on the shrine in Shiraz have been sentenced to 15 and 10 years in prison.

Two female defendants in the case have also received a five-year prison sentence each, but they will be tracked within a defined radius with electronic ankle bracelets, the official said.

On October 26, 2022, an armed terrorist barged inside the revered holy shrine in Shiraz, killing 15 pilgrims, including women and children, and injuring dozens before he was arrested by security forces.

The terrorist was later pronounced dead at a hospital, succumbing to injuries sustained during the attack that sent shockwaves across the country.

A few suspects were immediately nabbed and some two weeks later the Intelligence Ministry announced the arrest of 26 Takfiri terrorists for involvement in the attack. The ministry said the men were nationals of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan, and none of them were Iranians.
