Google Unveils AI-Powered Smart Glasses with Live Persian Translation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Google has showcased its latest prototype of AI-powered smart glasses equipped with Android XR, featuring real-time language translation including support for Persian.

In a demonstration, Shahram Izadi, an Iranian-born employee and vice president at Google, tested the new augmented reality glasses by speaking Persian.

The device instantly translated his words into English, enabling a live conversation with his Indian colleague.

The demonstration was part of Google’s broader announcement on Tuesday, where it detailed its plans to partner with eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to develop stylish and comfortable smart glasses built on Android XR.

“What if your AI assistant could see the world from your perspective and offer hands-free help? That’s the vision driving our latest advancements in Android XR,” Izadi wrote in a company blog post.

Android XR is Google’s extended reality operating system, designed to work seamlessly with its AI model, Gemini.

According to Google, the integration of Gemini will significantly enhance the functionality of smart glasses the company has been developing for over a decade.

These glasses will include a camera, microphone, and speakers, and will connect to the user’s phone.
Users will be able to access apps, receive contextual assistance, and use features like messaging, navigation, and photography without holding a device.

The smart glasses will also offer an optional in-lens display for discreet information delivery, as well as real-time language translation capabilities, the company said.

To build this platform, Google is expanding its collaboration with Samsung beyond headsets to include glasses.

“Together, we’re creating a software and reference hardware platform that will enable the ecosystem to make great glasses,” Izadi added.

Android XR was first introduced in December as a joint development between Google and Samsung.

Initial devices running the platform, including Samsung’s upcoming Project Moohan headset, are expected later this year.

The announcement follows a broader trend in the tech industry, with firms like Meta, Amazon, Snap, Baidu, and Xiaomi also investing in AI-driven smart glasses.

Izadi noted that developers will gain access to the Android XR platform later this year, allowing them to begin building apps and experiences for the new generation of wearable technology.
