Iran Securing Eastern Border Quickly: Top General

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri said the process of creating barriers along the country’s eastern borders is in progress at a rapid pace.

The top Iranian general traveled to the southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan on Wednesday to observe the progress of security programs in the border areas.

Speaking to reporters during the visit, Major General Baqeri said the process of setting barriers along the eastern boundaries is moving forward rapidly.

He said the scheme for border security, which is a top priority for the Armed Forces, is being implemented on the basis of scientific principles and successful experiences.

The general also hailed the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Ground Force for taking fundamental measures to complete the border project.

The border security measures are implemented to protect the eastern frontiers from unauthorized entry, smuggling, and the activities of the terrorist groups, he added.

Several armed clashes have erupted at the border areas between Iran and Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021.

Iran is also grappling with an influx of Afghan migrants crossing the border in the hope of gaining access to basic rights, such as food safety, education and healthcare.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has estimated the number of Afghan immigrants in Iran at around 3 million. However, this number is likely much higher, given the wave of new arrivals, many of them undocumented.
