Iran Voices Concern about Sudan Crisis

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry expressed concern about the deterioration of domestic conflict in Sudan following the announcement of formation of a new parallel government.

In a statement released on Thursday night, Esmaeil Baqaei voiced concern about the developments unfolding in Sudan.

He said the announcement of formation of a parallel government in Sudan runs counter to the principles of the African country’s national sovereignty and integrity, warning against the destructive consequences of the new decision for Sudan’s stability and security.

The Iranian spokesman emphasized the necessity of respecting Sudan’s territorial integrity and unity, warning against the continuation of detrimental foreign interference in the internal affairs of Sudan.

“The solution to the crisis in Sudan is cessation of clashes and start of Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue without foreign interference,” Baqaei underlined.

A coalition led by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is fighting for power in Sudan’s brutal civil war, has announced the formation of a new parallel government.

In a video statement, the RSF named a prime minister and unveiled a sovereign council.

The so-called Tasis Alliance is based on a partnership between the RSF and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), a powerful armed group that controls swaths of South Kordofan and Blue Nile states in southern Sudan.

SPLM-N has been fighting a rebellion against the central government and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) for 40 years – a conflict rooted in aggressive land grabs by central elites.

The RSF and SAF are former allies, yet a power struggle triggered an all-out civil war in April 2023.
