New Caucasus Corridor Must Ensure Iran’s Access to Other Routes: FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized that the newly proposed transport corridor as a result of a peace treaty between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan must not block Iran’s ability to access other transit routes.

In a telephone conversation with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan, Araqchi welcomed the finalization of the peace agreement between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Expressing Iran’s reservations about the transport routes, the foreign minister stressed that the new corridor that is designed to link the Republic of Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan and grant the US a 99-year development lease on the route in southern Armenia must not bring about any change in the geopolitics of the region or cut off Iran’s access to other connection routes.

Araqchi emphasized that any decision or measure in that regard must observe the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries.

Any agreement or plan on the creation of a corridor ought to comply with requirements of stability and security in the regional states, he stated.

For his part, Mirzoyan briefed Araqchi on the latest developments regarding his country’s peace treaty with the Republic of Azerbaijan and the creation of a new corridor.

Highlighting the significance of Iran’s views about the geopolitical sensitivities, the regional peace and stability, and respect for Armenia’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, he gave an assurance that Yerevan will take account of regional peace and Iran’s mutual interests in any decision about the transport routes.

Armenia prioritizes the protection of its friendly ties with Iran that are based upon good neighborliness and mutual interests, Mirzoyan added.
