Iran Highly Sensitive about Its Access to Transit Routes: FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi highlighted the significance that Iran attaches to its unrestrained access to transit routes.

Politics

The Iranian foreign minister said in a post on his Instagram account that he had held separate meetings with the deputy foreign minister of Armenia and the Russian Foreign Ministry’s special envoy for the Caucasus affairs on Wednesday.

“International issues, with the focus on political developments in the Caucasus region, were discussed in those meetings,” Araqchi said.

“I emphasized once again that while the Islamic Republic of Iran supports the establishment of peace and stability in the relations among the neighboring states, it pays special attention to the maintenance of the region’s geopolitical stability and its national interests, and will show special sensitivity to any plan or project that may restrict our country’s access to routes or the fulfillment of its interests,” the foreign minister added.

In a telephone conversation with his Armenian counterpart on Tuesday, Araqchi reacted to a US-brokered agreement on the creation of a corridor that is designed to link the Republic of Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan and grant the US a 99-year development lease on the route in southern Armenia.

He emphasized that the newly proposed transport corridor as a result of a peace treaty between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan must not block Iran’s ability to access other transit routes.

Any agreement or plan on the creation of a corridor ought to comply with requirements of stability and security in the regional states, Araqchi told his Armenian counterpart.
