In a post on his X account on Wednesday night, Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Esmaeil Baqaei said he had a meeting with China’s Ambassador Cong Peiwu in Tehran.

“We discussed Iran-China's constantly flourishing bilateral relations and the importance of building on our shared historical, civilizational, and cultural ties to further expand our cooperation in all areas of mutual interest,” the spokesman said.

The Iranian president is going to attend the 25th Heads of State Council meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in China’s Tianjin on August 31 and September 1.

The upcoming summit is expected to focus on enhancing multilateral cooperation, trade, and connectivity among member states, as well as addressing regional security concerns.

Iran’s participation at the highest level reflects Tehran’s determination to deepen its engagement with Asia and expand cooperation with strategic partners such as China.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), founded in 2001, is a major Eurasian political, economic and security alliance that includes China, Russia, India, Pakistan, and several Central Asian states.

Iran became a full member of the SCO in 2023 after years of observer status, marking a strategic shift in its regional and international partnerships.
