Araqchi: UN’s Credibility Undermined by Obstructionism of Certain Powers

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi warned that the credibility of the UN is being seriously eroded by the obstructionism and undue influence of certain powers, stressing that the world body must act decisively to uphold the UN Charter, justice, and the rule of law.

In a meeting with President of the United Nations General Assembly Annalena Baerbock on the sidelines of the UNGA in New York on Saturday, Araqchi highlighted the unique role of the General Assembly as the only universal body with membership of all states and reminded of its responsibility to safeguard the UN Charter, the rule of law, and justice.

He strongly deplored the obstructionism and undue influence of certain powers over the UN’s duties, particularly regarding the genocide in Gaza and the Israeli regime’s warmongering in West Asia.

Araqchi described the recent military aggressions by the Zionist regime and the US against Iran as a dangerous development in the UN’s 80-year history, stressing the obligation of all UN bodies to firmly respond to such violations.

The top Iranian diplomat also condemned the decision of the three European states to follow the US in seeking to reinstate terminated Security Council resolutions against Iran, denouncing the move as unlawful and illegitimate. He also warned of its negative consequences for diplomatic processes related to Iran’s nuclear issue.

For her part, Baerbock emphasized the need for all states to adhere to the UN Charter and called for the continuation of diplomacy to prevent heightened tensions in the region, including on Iran’s nuclear file.
