Iran Not Bound by Snapback, Enrichment Goes On, EU3 to Face Response: Qalibaf

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran will not recognize or comply with the illegal snapback mechanism pushed by the European troika, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said, stressing that Tehran’s enrichment activities will continue under international law.

Addressing an open session of the Parliament on Sunday, Qalibaf said the so-called snapback mechanism invoked by the three European states (the UK, France and Germany) is illegal and carries no binding force for any country.

He noted that Iran considers the reimposition of terminated sanctions under the snapback claim unlawful.

“Given that Russia and China, as permanent members of the Security Council, have clearly and officially rejected the validity of this move, no state is obligated to comply with such resolutions,” he said.

He added that Iran likewise does not regard itself bound by these illegal resolutions, including any call for suspension of uranium enrichment. “Our right to enrichment remains recognized under international law,” he asserted.

The speaker noted that the sanctions revived under the EU3’s push pale in comparison to US sanctions and are also riddled with legal flaws due to the illegitimacy of the snapback mechanism.

“If any country intends to act against Iran on the basis of these unlawful resolutions, it will face Iran’s serious retaliatory response,” he warned, adding that the three European sponsors of the move “will witness Tehran’s reaction as well.”
