Emergency services were called to the mosque on Phyllis Avenue late Saturday night after reports of a fire.
Footage showed two masked attackers dressed in dark clothing approaching the entrance, dousing it with an accelerant, and setting it alight before fleeing.
Fire crews quickly brought the flames under control, but the mosque and a nearby vehicle suffered heavy damage.
No worshippers inside were harmed.
Sussex Police released images of two suspects wanted in connection with the attack.
One wore a black jacket with a “Pre London” logo, while the other had bright red gloves.
Detective Inspector Gavin Patch described the act as “an appalling and reckless attack” and confirmed that the case was being treated as “arson with intent to endanger life.”
He urged the public to help identify the perpetrators before they could strike again.
Superintendent Rachel Swinney said police had intensified patrols around mosques and community centers across Sussex, claiming the force maintains a “zero-tolerance approach to hate crime.”
A spokesperson for the targeted mosque condemned the attack as a “hateful act” that violated the spirit of Peacehaven.
“While the incident has caused damage to our building and vehicles, we are profoundly grateful that no one was injured,” the spokesperson said.
“This hateful act does not represent our community or our town. Peacehaven has always been a place of kindness, respect, and mutual support.”
The East London Mosque also denounced the assault, noting it was the second violent attack on a place of worship in Britain that week.
“We must not let the politics of hate divide us,” the statement read. “We stand united for peace, safety, and justice.”
Local MP James MacCleary called the attack “appalling,” emphasizing the mosque’s importance to his constituents and confirming that police were treating the case as a hate crime.
