The Afghan Ministry of Defense spokesperson, Enayatullah Khwarizmi, said on Saturday that Taliban forces launched “successful retaliatory” attacks against Pakistani soldiers in response to Pakistan’s “repeated violations” and air strikes on Afghan soil.
The clashes followed explosions in Kabul earlier this week in an air strike that the Taliban accused Pakistan of carrying out.
Islamabad has not claimed responsibility for Thursday’s attacks.
However, Pakistan accuses the Afghan Taliban administration of sheltering members of the Pakistani Taliban who stage attacks inside Pakistan, allegedly with support from India.
India denies the accusation, while the Taliban says it does not permit its territory to be used against other countries.
The escalating conflict has raised alarm across the region.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi urged both sides “to exercise restraint,” saying in a live interview on state television that “stability between the countries contributes to regional stability”.
Qatar voiced “deep concern” over the growing tensions and their “potential impact on the security and stability of the region.”
The Qatari Foreign Ministry called on both sides “to priorities dialogue and diplomacy, exercise restraint, and work to contain the disputes in a way that helps reduce tension, avoids escalation, and contributes to regional peace and stability.”
Saudi Arabia also urged calm.
“The kingdom calls for restraint, avoiding escalation, and embracing dialogue and wisdom to contribute to reducing tensions and maintaining security and stability in the region,” the Saudi Foreign Ministry said.
It added that Riyadh supports all regional and international efforts “aimed at promoting peace and stability” and remains committed to ensuring security for “the brotherly Pakistani and Afghan peoples.”
