Torrential rain from the remnants of Hurricane Priscilla and Tropical Rainstorm Raymond has caused widespread damage in five states — Veracruz, Puebla, Hidalgo, Queretaro and San Luis Potosi — according to a government statement.
Authorities said 18 people died in Veracruz, 16 in Hidalgo, nine in Puebla and one in Queretaro.
Mexico’s El Universal newspaper reported a higher death toll of 48 and said dozens remain unaccounted for.
More than 320,000 people have faced power outages, and over 16,000 homes have been damaged. Officials warned that overflowing rivers and additional landslides could worsen the situation.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said the military has been deployed for rescue and relief operations. “We will not leave anyone without support,” she said on X.
Photographs released by the military showed soldiers evacuating residents in life rafts and rescue workers wading through waist-deep floodwaters.
Mexico has faced unusually heavy rainfall this year, with Mexico City experiencing its wettest June in over 20 years.
The weakened remnants of Raymond, with wind gusts reaching 45 km/h (28 mph), were expected to strike southern Baja California late Sunday.
