According to a UNIFIL statement, the Israeli regime’s assault violated UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and Lebanon’s sovereignty, showing complete disregard for the safety of peacekeepers carrying out their Security Council–mandated duties in the south.
The mission reported no casualties or damage from the incident but confirmed that an Israeli regime drone had flown over a UNIFIL patrol in the same area, forcing peacekeepers to take defensive measures to neutralize it.
UNIFIL, established in 1978 and expanded after the 2006 war between the Israeli regime and Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement, continues to operate along the border amid rising tensions.
Despite a ceasefire agreement that took effect in November 2024, the Israeli regime has repeatedly launched airstrikes inside Lebanon under the pretext of targeting Hezbollah infrastructure.
Under the terms of the truce, Israeli forces were to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 2025.
However, the regime has defied the agreement, maintaining troops at five border outposts and continuing its acts of aggression against Lebanon’s sovereignty.
