Iran’s Interaction with IAEA in Accordance with Law Ratified by Parliament: Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is based on the law passed by the Iranian Parliament in coordination with the Supreme National Security Council, the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry said.

At his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Esmaeil Baqaei dismissed claims by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi about secret negotiations.

He said the basis for Iran’s cooperation and interaction with the IAEA is the law approved by the Parliament, noting that Iran remains a member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and continues its engagement according to that legislation.

Baqaei stated that part of Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA is routine, such as the replacement of fuel for the Bushehr nuclear power plant.

He stressed that under the current circumstances, the framework for cooperation is defined by the parliamentary law in coordination with the Supreme National Security Council of Iran.

The NPT and the Safeguards Agreement form the foundation for Iran’s interaction with the IAEA, just as for any other country, Baqaei added.

While UN Security Council Resolution 2231 was in effect, Iran voluntarily accepted time-bound commitments aimed at lifting unjust sanctions, however, Iran itself determines the scope and limits of its cooperation and will continue to act based on its obligations and the parliamentary legislation, the spokesman explained.
