Addressing a meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna on Thursday, Reza Najafi said the IAEA director general’s latest report clearly shows the current situation stems from unlawful attacks by the US and the Israeli regime against Iranian facilities under Safeguards Agreement.
Najafi noted that the suspension of verification activities and the withdrawal of inspectors from Iran were consequences of the security conditions created by those military attacks. Despite this, he said, Iran has cooperated in good faith, enabling the resumption of verification at sites unaffected by the strikes and granting inspectors full access.
He also criticized the US and the European troika –the UK, France and Germany- for ignoring these facts and attempting to present the situation as normal.
Their proposed draft resolution, Najafi said, promotes a false narrative, distorts safeguards obligations, and seeks to revive the failed snapback issue within the Agency.
The Iranian ambassador emphasized that the sponsors of the resolution —who were themselves involved in the attacks on Iran— are trying to evade responsibility by omitting any reference to their own aggressive actions, even though the IAEA’s official report documents the June 2025 strikes.
The countries unwilling to recognize the root cause of the current situation are in no position to dictate solutions, he stated, adding that Tehran remains fully prepared for meaningful diplomacy when met with goodwill and seriousness, but will not accept pressure or attempts to deprive Iran of its legitimate rights.
