Iran Asserts Right to Hold US Accountable for June Aggression

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran has reaffirmed its “full and unequivocal” right to pursue accountability from the United States and seek compensation for losses from the illegal June aggression, the Iranian ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations said.

Saeed Iravani said this in a letter to the UN secretary general and the president of the Security Council on Wednesday.

The letter followed a US Air Force acknowledgement that its F-35 stealth fighters entered Iranian airspace and escorted B-2 bombers to strike nuclear facilities.

Iravani said this disclosure was further supported by US President Donald Trump’s confession on November 6 that he was “very much in charge of” the Israeli-American aggression against Iran.

He said the confession entails criminal responsibility for American officials and individuals involved in serious breaches of international humanitarian law, including the crime of aggression.

He added that the Islamic Republic “reserves its full and unequivocal right to pursue, through all available legal avenues, the establishment of accountability for those responsible, and also to secure full reparation for all losses and damages incurred as a result of this internationally wrongful act.”

Iravani also stressed that Washington is obligated to provide full reparations for violations against Iran and its citizens under established international law.

He said the United Nations cannot remain silent in light of the United States’ “own admissions” of its role in these acts against the Islamic Republic.

On June 13, Israel launched attacks against Iran, killing at least 1,064 people and hitting civilian infrastructure.

On June 22, the United States entered the war by bombing three Iranian nuclear sites, Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, in a grave violation of the UN Charter, international law and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Two days later, Iran managed to imposed a halt to the assault after carrying out waves of retaliatory operations.

In his letter, Iravani renewed Tehran’s call on the UN to “take appropriate measures … to ensure accountability of both the United States and the Israeli regime for these grave violations, and to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice.”

He said the Israeli-US aggression targeted Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter.

He added that the 12-day assault included deliberate attacks against civilians and civilian objects, in flagrant disregard of the fundamental principles of international law and international humanitarian law.
