Iran's Pezeshkian Calls for Removal of Banking Obstacles to Boost Trade with Kazakhstan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday urged the swift removal of banking and financial barriers with Kazakhstan, saying the step was essential to unlock far greater economic potential between the two countries.

During talks in Astana with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Pezeshkian noted that bilateral trade had already risen by 40 percent.

He said, however, that both nations possessed much larger capacity for cooperation by fully engaging their private sectors.

The Iranian president stressed that, despite the notable trade increase, resolving banking and financial connectivity remained a top priority to enable further growth.

He called for full implementation of the Free Trade Agreement between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union, saying it would significantly strengthen economic ties with Kazakhstan and urged all relevant bodies to ensure its complete execution.

Pezeshkian expressed gratitude for Tokayev’s hospitality and highlighted the deep cultural links rooted in centuries of interaction along the historic Silk Road, describing them as a solid foundation for stronger relations.

He noted that Iran had maintained friendly ties with Kazakhstan since its independence and that relations with neighbors held special importance for the Islamic Republic.

Pezeshkian advocated closer coordination between Tehran and Astana on regional and international issues, pointing to substantial progress already achieved in political, economic and cultural fields.

He highlighted active cooperation within multilateral frameworks, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Eurasian Economic Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Caspian Sea littoral states, and called for deeper joint efforts.

Referring to sensitive regional and global conditions, Pezeshkian said the region faced complex challenges posed by unilateral actions from the United States and some Western powers that threatened the sovereignty and independence of nations.

In this context, he concluded, Iran and Kazakhstan must pursue their bilateral relations with even greater resolve.
