In an interview with Kazakhstan’s Kazinform International News Agency, Pezeshkian noted that although bilateral trade is expanding, the target of reaching $3 billion in trade volume has not yet been achieved.
He emphasized that stronger political relations, simplified visa procedures, and broader cultural exchanges are essential to unlocking this potential and improving economic cooperation.
Commenting on Iran’s official membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the president expressed confidence that it would open new economic opportunities. He pointed out that Iran’s market of nearly 90 million people offers significant potential for EAEU members, adding that tariff reductions within the bloc could substantially boost trade and industrial cooperation between Iran and Kazakhstan.
Pezeshkian also underscored the strategic importance of developing a new logistics terminal in southern Iran to strengthen the International North-South Transport Corridor. Enhanced rail connectivity between Kazakhstan and Iranian ports, he said, would facilitate trade, cultural interaction, and long-term economic gains for both sides.
On environmental matters, the Iranian president called for coordinated regional efforts to protect the Caspian Sea. He stressed that consensus among the littoral states is vital to preserving the marine ecosystem while ensuring sustainable economic activity, urging experts to work together on a unified environmental strategy.
Addressing scientific cooperation, Pezeshkian said Iran has made notable progress in medicine and biotechnology and is ready to share its expertise with Kazakhstan and other Islamic countries. He added that deeper scientific and technological collaboration could bring mutual benefits, particularly in healthcare.
The president also highlighted Kazakhstan’s strategic role along the historic Silk Road, describing it as a key hub for cultural, scientific, and economic exchange. He emphasized the importance of utilizing frameworks such as the EAEU and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to further strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation.
Responding to a question about Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Pezeshkian praised his extensive political background, citing his experience as parliament speaker and foreign minister as assets in addressing regional challenges effectively.
