During a meeting in Tehran on Saturday with Tagesse Chafo, speaker of the Ethiopian House of Peoples’ Representatives, Pezeshkian said BRICS offers a modern model of interaction based on mutual respect for national sovereignty and cultural diversity, creating opportunities for fair and balanced global cooperation.
The president reaffirmed Iran’s interest in expanding bilateral relations with Ethiopia, stressing that this objective can be achieved by activating the joint cooperation commission, identifying shared interests, recognizing complementary capabilities, and promoting dialogue grounded in mutual benefit.
Pezeshkian also reiterated Iran’s commitment to playing a responsible role in promoting sustainable peace and security, both regionally and internationally. He emphasized Iran’s support for a world free from war and violence, noting that those with a deep understanding of human nature prioritize dialogue and cooperation over confrontation.
For his part, Chafo welcomed the talks and emphasized Ethiopia’s determination to strengthen ties with Iran, particularly in the diplomatic, economic, and security fields. He said the parliaments of both countries are prepared to support their respective foreign ministries in advancing diplomatic engagement and deepening bilateral relations.
Highlighting economic cooperation, Chafo said Ethiopia aims to expand trade, pursue joint investment projects with Iran, and make effective use of BRICS mechanisms, including the New Development Bank, to enhance economic and financial collaboration.
He also pointed to the deep cultural and historical connections between the Iranian and Ethiopian people and acknowledged Iran’s constructive role in promoting peace and stability in West Asia.
Chafo further noted Ethiopia’s aspiration to act as a responsible and constructive player in the Horn of Africa, adding that cooperation with Iran on peace and security could contribute to long-term stability in both West Asia and Africa.
