Iran, Russia Push to Clear Remaining Hurdles to Launch North-South Corridor

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Senior officials from Iran and Russia underlined the need to wrap up outstanding arrangements and eliminate remaining obstacles to bring the North-South Corridor into full operation, describing the project as a key strategic undertaking for both countries.

Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Saveliev met with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani in Tehran as part of follow-up to high-level agreements reached between the presidents of the two countries. The talks focused on removing existing barriers and moving the long-envisioned project into its practical implementation stage.

The two sides examined the North-South Corridor as a major element shaping the region’s geopolitical landscape.

Larijani said Iran has taken a clear and final decision to operationalize the corridor, noting that all executive and institutional impediments would be addressed within a short timeframe. He added that the required agreements would be finalized to provide a solid legal and operational framework for the project.

He further pointed to the ongoing follow-up by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, saying that all land plots along the corridor’s route are to be acquired by the government by the end of the year, ensuring that the project moves forward smoothly and without disruption.

Saveliev, for his part, welcomed Iran’s determined stance and announced Russia’s readiness to speed up the project and commence practical operations.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed that the North-South Corridor constitutes an integral part of the joint strategy of Iran and Russia to strengthen long-term cooperation and establish independent regional connectivity routes. They agreed to activate mechanisms for sustained high-level monitoring and to maintain regular coordination between relevant authorities in both countries.
