Israeli troops opened fire in the Shujayea neighborhood of eastern Gaza City, killing two people, the Palestinian news agency Wafa said.
In a related development, their deaths brought the number of Palestinians reported killed across Gaza in the past 24 hours to at least 12, including eight bodies recovered from rubble following earlier Israeli attacks.
The Gaza City shooting was the latest incident amid what Palestinian authorities describe as hundreds of Israeli regime violations of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas that took effect on October 10.
Gaza’s Government Media Office on Monday condemned Israel’s “serious and systematic violations” of the truce, saying the Israeli authorities had breached the ceasefire 875 times since it came into force.
Those violations include continued Israeli air and artillery strikes, the unlawful demolition of Palestinian homes and civilian infrastructure, and at least 265 incidents of Israeli troops shooting Palestinian civilians, the office said in a statement.
Separately, the media office said at least 411 Palestinians had been killed and 1,112 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since the ceasefire began.
Worsening shelter conditions
Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of Palestinian families displaced by Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza continue to face severe shortages of food, medicine and shelter, according to local authorities and humanitarian agencies.
As the occupying power in Gaza, Israel has obligations under international law to ensure the welfare of the Palestinian population.
However, the United Nations and aid groups say the Israeli regime has systematically obstructed the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian assistance into the territory.
The situation has been further aggravated by winter storms battering Gaza in recent weeks, with rights groups saying Israel’s refusal to allow tents, blankets and other basic supplies into the enclave is endangering lives.
On Monday, the Gaza Government Media Office said only 17,819 aid trucks had entered Gaza since October, out of 43,800 that were supposed to be allowed in under the ceasefire agreement.
That figure amounts to an average of 244 trucks per day, well below the 600 daily deliveries Israel agreed to permit, the office said.
In a related statement, a spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated calls “for the lifting of all restrictions of the entry of aid into Gaza, including shelter material”.
“Over the past 24 hours, and despite the ceasefire, we have continued to receive reports of air strikes, shelling and gunfire in all five governorates of Gaza. This has resulted in reported casualties and disruptions to humanitarian operations,” spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.
He added that UN humanitarian partners were working to address severe shelter shortages, particularly among displaced families living in unsafe areas.
“Our partners continue to work to improve access to dignified shelter for approximately 1.3 million people in Gaza in the past week, about 3,500 families affected by storms are living in flood prone areas,” Dujarric said.
Dujarric said aid deliveries had included tents, bedding sets, mattresses, blankets and winter clothing for children, but warned that needs remained overwhelming.
The appeals followed a statement a day earlier from Gaza’s Palestinian Ministry of Health, which said shortages of medicines and medical supplies were hampering patient care.
Nearly all of Gaza’s hospitals and health facilities were attacked during Israel’s two-year bombardment of the territory, damaging at least 125 facilities, including 34 hospitals.
According to Palestinian health authorities, the Israeli army has killed at least 70,937 Palestinians in Gaza, mostly women and children, and wounded 171,192 others since the war began in October 2023.
