In a joint statement released by Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, the countries said the Israeli regime’s recognition constituted a “serious precedent” that endangers “international peace and security.”
In the statement, the foreign ministers said they condemned the move “in the strongest terms,” describing it as a violation of “the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, which explicitly stipulates the imperative of protecting the sovereignty of states and their territorial integrity, and reflects Israel's expansionist” stance.
Meanwhile, the statement said the decision demonstrated Israel’s “full and blatant disregard to international law,” warning of potential “serious repercussions ... on peace and security in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea.”
The countries reaffirmed their full support for Somalia’s sovereignty and said they “unequivocally” rejected any measures undermining the country’s unity, territorial integrity or sovereignty over its entire territory.
Separately, the statement said the countries fully rejected “any potential link between such measure and any attempts to forcibly expel the Palestinian people out of their land, which is unequivocally rejected in any form as a matter of principle.”
Israel on Friday became the world’s first country to recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state, triggering broad rejection from countries in Africa and the Middle East, including Türkiye’s, which was also part of the joint statement released by Qatar.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not received international recognition, operating instead as a de facto independent administrative, political and security entity.
Meanwhile, Somalia’s central government has been unable to reassert control over the region, while Somaliland’s leadership has failed to secure formal recognition of independence.
The Somali government refuses to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, considers it an integral part of its territory, and says any direct engagement or agreements with the region violate Somalia’s sovereignty and national unity.
