President Expects Progress in Iran-EU Trade Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced that the economic relations between Tehran and the European Union (EU) will further develop in future.

In a Wednesday meeting with Latvia’s Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics here in Tehran, President Rouhani pointed to the fact that the country will take over the rotating presidency of the EU in the next year, and expressed the hope that Iran’s economic relations with the EU would develop.

Rouhani said that the policy of Iran’s new government is based on the promotion of ties with friendly countries and détente in international arena, adding that settlement of international and regional problems would be achieved through joint cooperation among countries.

President Rouhani further stated that Latvia is among countries with which Iran has good relations, and continued that we want development of ties with Latvia and there is no obstacle in this way from Iranian side.

President Rouhani referred to the issue of terrorism and radicalism in the region and world and its consequences in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria and said that the campaign against terrorism and radicalism is among issues that need all-out cooperation of all countries.

He added that Iran is ready for dialogue and cooperation with Latvia in all fields.

Given that Latvia will hold the rotating EU presidency in the next year, Rouhani expressed hope that bilateral communication between Iran and Latvia gets closer and it would be beneficial for both countries and the whole EU.

Rinkevics, for his part, conveyed greetings of Latvia president to his Iranian counterpart and described his talks with Iranian senior officials as fruitful.
