Iran Stresses Closer Ties with Nicaragua

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif underlined that Tehran is willing to promote relations with Latin American countries, Nicaragua in particular.

In a meeting with his visiting Nicaraguan counterpart Samuel Santos Lopez in Tehran on Saturday, Zarif stressed the necessity of taking “effective steps” to pave the way for further expansion of ties between the two countries.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran and Nicaragua have great capacities to promote mutual cooperation in various areas, including engineering and agriculture,” the Iranian foreign minister said.

Samuel Santos Lopez, for his part, emphasized the need for promoting cooperation between the two countries, saying that Iranian companies can participate and invest in various projects in Nicaragua.

He reiterated that the country welcomes exchange of experiences with the Iranian side.

The promotion of all-out cooperation with the Latin American countries has been among the top priorities of the Islamic Republic's foreign policy over the past few years.

In September 2013 and less than a month after taking the office, President Hassan Rouhani stressed Tehran's willingness to boost cooperation between Iran and Latin America.

Iran has forged hundreds of agreements with Latin American nations in recent years.
