Iran Hails Latin American Nations’ Anti-Israeli Stance

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s foreign minister called Latin American nations’ decision to recall their envoys from Israel a “noble move” which will affect the future of the world.

In a meeting with his Venezuelan counterpart on Monday, Mohammad Javad Zarif hailed the Latin American country’s "revolutionary positions in the face of massacre of defenseless people in Gaza and the Zionist regime's destructive and anti-human measures."

Zarif also described Tehran-Caracas relations as strong with high potential to be strengthened in different spheres.

The Iranian minister further placed high value on Venezuela’s resistance against "global unilateral attitudes."

Elias Jose Jaua Milano, for his part, appreciated Iran’s efforts in successfully holding Palestine Committee of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran, and welcomed any move to prevent the killing of defenseless people of Gaza by the Zionist regime of Israel.

The two ministers also discussed ways to boost political and economic cooperation. They welcomed the idea of holding Iran-Venezuela joint economic cooperation commissions in the future, describing such commissions as suitable opportunities to develop ties.

On July 8, Israel launched air strikes on the Gaza Strip. After 10 days of bombardment of the enclave from the air and sea, the Israeli forces started a ground operation in the Gaza Strip.

The death toll from 29 days of Israeli onslaught on the people of Gaza has reached 1,846 with more than 9,400 injured, according to Gaza’s health ministry officials.

UN figures show about two-thirds of the victims were civilians, drawing sharp criticism from around the world.

On July 30, Latin American countries such as El Salvador, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador and Peru withdrew their ambassadors from the occupied Palestine in protest to Israel's military offensive against Gaza.

Brazil was also one of the 29 countries in the UN Human Rights Council that voted last Wednesday to investigate Israel over its military offensive in Gaza.

In 2006, late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez delivered a strong speech to the United Nations General Assembly, denouncing Israeli aggressions.

“This is imperialist, fascist, assassin, genocidal, the empire and Israel firing on the people of Palestine and Lebanon,” Chavez had stated regarding Israel’s colonial violence.
