British PM to Meet with Iran’s Rouhani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Downing Street announced that Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron is scheduled to hold a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The upcoming meeting with president of Iran is part of Cameron’s efforts to mobilize support in the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group, the Sky News quoted Downing Street as saying.

Cameron will become the first British prime minister to meet an Iranian president since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in a historic encounter in New York.

Downing Street also added that Cameron is ready to work with Tehran if it was willing to join the efforts to defeat the ISIL.

World leaders are gathering in New York to attend the 69th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced that more than 140 heads of state or government will attend the 193-nation assembly’s annual "general debate", which begins on Wednesday and ends September 30.
