Iran Congratulates Tunisia on Holding Successful Elections

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry congratulated the Tunisian people and government on the successful holding of the parliamentary elections in the North African country as electoral officials declared official results.

In a message issued on Tuesday, Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham hailed Tunisia’s success in “passing through the critical phase of adopting (new) constitution” and holding the elections.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported stability, tranquility, unity, territorial integrity and independence of Tunisia and other countries in the region,” she noted.

Afkham also appreciated the vigilance of the Tunisian people and political groups who actively participated in the elections and expressed the hope that the formation of the new parliament would pave the way for the country’s presidential election.

Tunisians went to polls in landmark parliamentary elections on Sunday in a further step in the country’s democratic transition nearly four years after the revolution that toppled the dictatorial regime of Zein al-Abidine Ben Ali.

Leading Tunisian party Nidaa Tounes won more than 80 seats in an election for the new 217-member parliament against 67 seats for Ennahda party, a party source, citing a preliminary ballot count, said on Monday.
