Moderation Inevitable Choice for Countering Extremism: Iran’s Rouhani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani described moderate attitudes in politics as a necessary option for tackling the growing threat of extremism in the contemporary world.

“Moderation… is a necessary option for (finding) a way out of the damaging conditions of the current confrontations and extremisms in the arena of internal and international politics,” President Rouhani said in a message to the first National Conference on Moderation’, held in Tehran on Wednesday.

Rouhani said politics becomes prone to radicalism and extremism whenever it is inclined to authoritarianism instead of ensuring justice and humanitarian solidarity in the society.

Extremism is a phenomenon that has now turned into a “real threat” to the region and the world, the president warned.

Running under the slogan "Moderation and Wisdom," President Rouhani has laid emphasis on moderate attitudes since taking office in August 2013.

On December 18, 2013, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly voted to approve Rouhani’s WAVE (World Against Violence and Extremism) proposal.

Wave Act asks the UN member states to unite against extremism, violence and sectarian conflicts in all their forms.

The resolution, which received overwhelming approval in the global body, also necessitates “appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace and to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character.”
