People Not to Let Bahrain Turn into Base for Foreign Forces: Opposition Figure

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Bahraini people won’t let their country turn into a base for any foreign military force and are against any attempt to destabilize the region, a senior opposition figure announced.

“People in Bahrain do not want their country to become a scene of conflicts in the region,” the head of the media communications office of Bahrain's Al-Wifaq Islamic Society said in an interview with the Tasnim New Agency.

Seyyed Taher al-Mousawi referred to the planned establishment of British military base in Bahrain and said that Bahraini people need a democractically-elected government, not a military base.

The opposition figure said any attempt to destabilize the region is rejected by Bahraini people and expressed the hope that the region stays stable.

Al-Mousawi also stressed that any military or non-military presence in any country including Bahrain should be decided by their people, adding that the basic problem in Bahrain is ignoring the demands and the will of people.

Earlier, UK Foreign Minister Philip Hammond announced that the Royal Navy will return to the former British protectorate after a 40-year absence.

The announcement sparked a new wave of protests rallies in the Persian Gulf monarchy.  Regime forces used tear gas after hundreds of people took to streets in Sitra, a town near the base, to protest in the wake on. Protesters said the move was a form of payback for support of the repressive regime, which crushed the pro-democracy uprising in 2011, arresting and allegedly torturing scores of activists.
