UNESCO Director-General to Meet President Rouhani on Tuesday

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Irina Bokova, who is currently on a trip to Tehran, plans to meet with Iranian president Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday, an Iranian official announced.

The issue was announced by Hossein Salar Amoli, Iran’s deputy minister of science for the international affairs.

He said the visit by Bokova is the first visit to Iran by a UNESCO director-general in ten years, adding that the visit is aimed at boosting cooperation and enhancing Iran-UNESCO ties.

The Iranian official further noted that UNESCO is one of the international organizations which share common views with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Bokova arrived in Tehran on Friday at the invitation of Iran's Minister of Science, Research and Technology Reza Faraji Dana.

On Saturday, during a cultural meeting attended by Bokova and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, a compilation of Iran’s historical maps that are registered in the UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, was unveiled.

Irina Bokova, born in 1952 in Sofia, Bulgaria has been the director-general of the UNESCO since November 15, 2009, and reelected for a second term in 2013.  She is the first woman to lead the Organization.
