Commander : US Failed to Prevent Outbreak of Islamic Awakening Movement
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The US has definitely failed to avert the Islamic Awakening in the Middle East although it had realized in advance that such awakening movement was about to engulf the region, a senior Iranian commander stressed.
“The completely covert objective behind the Americans’ presence in the Middle East region was to prevent the Islamic Awakening. They had indeed realized before the occurrence of the Islamic Awakening that a new awakening current was being shaped in the region, but failed to prevent it,” Commander of the Iranian Army Ground Force Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan said in the northeastern city of Mashhad on Tuesday.
He also made clear that the US started an extensive military campaign against two neighbors of Iran as part of futile efforts to confront the Islamic Republic.
“The main purpose behind the US presence in the Middle East was to confront the Islamic Republic of Iran, and when they (Americans) found themselves unable to face up to the Islamic Republic of Iran directly, they invaded Afghanistan and Iraq,” he contended.
The US and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but more than 12 years on, insecurity is running high across the country despite the presence of tens of thousands of the US-led foreign troops.
And on March 19, 2003, US-led forces invaded Iraq under the pretext of wiping out the stocks of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) belonging to the executed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s regime. However, no such weapons were ever discovered in the country.
Hundreds of thousands of people were killed and Iraq’s infrastructure was destroyed following the US-led military invasion of the Arab country.
