Iran Lauds Turkey Presidential Election

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday congratulated Turkey on holding “successful” presidential election, and expressed the hope for the enhancement of Tehran-Ankara ties during the new Turkish president’s term.

In a message on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham congratulated Turkey’s outgoing Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on winning the nation’s first direct presidential election.

Erdogan, 60, Turkey’s prime minister for more than a decade, secured victory in Sunday's election by winning 52 percent of the vote. He will be inaugurated on August 28.

The Iranian spokeswoman also hailed Erdogan for winning the confidence of a large number of voters.

She further hoped that close ties and cooperation between the two Muslim neighbors on the bilateral, regional and international fields would flourish during the Turkish president-elect’s tenure.

Referring to Iran and Turkey as two of the “influential countries” in the region, Afkham noted that collective efforts could prove effective in taking up the regional challenges.
