Shiite Politician Hails Iran's Support for Iraq's Unity

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, Ammar al-Hakim, thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran’s support for unity, stability, security and territorial integrity in Iraq.

“The Iraqi people and government appreciate Iran for its efforts to unify Iraq’s different ethnic and religious groups in their fight against terrorist groups,” hakim said during his meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Baghdad on Sunday evening.

He also commented on Tehran’s support for the recent political developments in Iraq, saying that Iran was the first country that came to assist Iraq and backed the country’ political process.

Zarif, for his part, congratulated Hakim on the Iraqi groups’ success in electing president and prime minister, and hailed the Islamic Supreme Council’s role in this process.

He also emphasized that Iran is ready to cooperate with the Iraqi government in all spheres, including in the campaign against terrorism.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, as always, follows developments in the region and believes that regional cooperation is a necessity to counter terrorist and anti-human groups,” Zarif stated, referring to the acts of terrorism committed by the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group.

On Wednesday, Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham had told reporters in Tehran that Iran is holding consultations with different countries, including the European states, to coordinate efforts aimed at fighting with the ISIL terrorist group operating in Iraq.
