Muslim, Buddhist Thinkers Condemn Violence, Extremism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Muslim and Buddhist thinkers on Wednesday condemned the violent and extremist acts committed in the name of religion.

In the final statement of the meeting of Multilateral Dialogue between Islam and Buddhism held in Iran’s capital, Muslim and Buddhist thinkers “laid emphasis on the cooperation of followers of religions and schools of thought to prepare the grounds for peace based on justice.”

The main theme of the meeting was “Cooperation between Muslims and Buddhists in Confronting Violence and Extremism”.

The meeting was held on December 30-31 by Iran's Center for Interreligious Dialogue in the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization, Tehran, and University of Religions and Religious Denominations, Qom.

High-ranking Buddhist leaders and thinkers from Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand as well as Iranian Muslims religious leaders and thinkers participated the meeting.

The thinkers also emphasized “taking common stances against any act that threaten religions and schools of thought and human life,” the statement reported.

Forging unity among followers of religions to solve the world problems was another issue stressed in the statement.

The participants further highlighted the establishment of closer links to fight racism in workplaces and improve interreligious relations.
