Top Iranian, British Diplomats Meet in Munich

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond met on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Saturday.

The two ministers discussed the nuclear talks between Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) and the latest developments regarding Tehran-London bilateral relations.

Following the meeting, Hammond hailed talks with Zarif as “constructive” in a post in his Twitter account.

“Nuclear deal (is) still possible if there is a will,” he added.

Hammond also called on Tehran not to miss the opportunity to strike a long-awaited deal.

Britain is one of the six world powers engaged in nuclear talks with Iran.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (alternatively known as the P5+1 or E3+3) are in talks to hammer out a final agreement to end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

Earlier in the day, Zarif also held a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Munich.

In another separate meeting in Munich, the Iranian foreign minister met Head of the International Atomic Energy Agency Yukiya Amano. They discussed cooperation between Iran and the UN nuclear agency as well as the course of nuclear talks between Tehran and six powers.

Zarif is also scheduled to hold a meeting with the European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini today.

The EU foreign policy chief is tasked with coordinating diplomacy with Iran on behalf of the Group 5+1.
