Iranian, Macedonian FMs Meet in New York

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Macedonian counterpart Nikola Poposki on Tuesday held a meeting in New York, in which the two discussed the issue of Syrian refugees as well as bilateral ties.

During the meeting held on the sidelines of the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, the two ministers conferred on the ongoing Syrian crisis and the flock of refugees fleeing the country towards Europe.

Zarif and Poposki explored avenues for expanding Tehran-Skopje cooperation on helping restore peace and end the conflict in war-torn Syria.

They also talked about Tehran’s plan to resolve the crisis using political and non-military tools.

Several European countries, including Macedonia, have been hit by a refugee crisis, with thousands of Syrians escaping the war in the Arab country rushing towards Europe.

Back in August, Macedonia declared a state of emergency and called out the army to confront a surge in migrants and refugees trying to reach Western Europe through Macedonia.

Later on, however, Macedonian police allowed hundreds of refugees to pass through their border from Greece after police fired stun grenades in a failed bid to stop them from breaking through.

Elsewhere in the Tuesday meeting, Zarif and Poposki discussed the expansion of bilateral ties in different economic, trade, educational, and cultural fields.

The reopening of Macedonia’s embassy in Tehran, and the two countries’ support for each other in international bodies were also on the agenda of the two officials’ talks.
