Swedish Diplomat Hails Iran’s Efforts to Help Settle Syria Crisis

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Sweden’s Special Envoy for Syrian Affairs Niklas Kebbon on Wednesday lauded Tehran’s efforts to help resolve the ongoing crisis in Syria.

Sweden believes in the peaceful resolution of the Syrian crisis and considers Iran to be playing a major part in helping settle the crisis, Kebbon said.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian here in Tehran.

The Iranian official, for his part, reaffirmed that Tehran has always demanded a political solution to the crisis in the Arab country.

Some countries, however, insisted on violent ways and provided weapons for terrorist groups instead of opting for a political solution, he added.

Amir Abdollahian emphasized that such measures (arms dispatch) led to the exacerbation of the situation and slaughter and displacement of millions of innocent people in Syria.

He also highlighted as significant European countries’ efforts to gain a realistic view of the Syrian problem and focus more on a political process, cessation of violence, and fight against terrorism.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011. According to the United Nations, more than 240,000 people have been killed and one million wounded during the conflict.
