Iranian Navy Commandos Take Action in War Game

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Commandos of the Iranian Navy on Thursday performed specific military operations on the second day of a massive naval drill, underway in Iran’s southeastern waters.

The second day of the main stage of the large-scale exercise by the Iranian Navy began on Thursday morning with the Navy commandos taking the lead.

Code-named “Velayat 94”, the drills cover an area of around 3 million square kilometers, stretching from east of the strategic Strait of Hormuz to the northern parts of the Indian Ocean, known as the 10-degrees latitude.

On Thursday, the Navy troops and commandos carried out operations to exercise defense along the country’s coastlines.

Armed with RPG-7 grenade launchers, the commandos targeted a series of the hypothetical enemy’s vessels near the coast.

Other exercises carried out by the Navy commandos included naval mine laying using the Ra’ad fast attack craft, defensive tactics by coastal artillery, and vehicular patrolling by 2-wheel and 4-wheel motorcycles equipped with shoulder-launched weapons.

A number of the mock enemy’s vessels were also targeted by the Iranian Azarakhsh and Shahab boats, armed with rocket launchers.

On Wednesday, various homegrown vessels including speedboats and Tareq-class heavy submarine, as well as airborne units were stationed in the zone as part of exercises to prevent the hypothetical enemy from entering the country’s territorial waters.

Iranian forces engaged in the war game also shooed away a US warship and a fighter jet that had been approaching the drill zone yesterday.

The situation became normal after the US forces were given a warning and left the zone immediately.

Naval drills are not rare in Iran’s southern waters, in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman and around the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The Navy usually unveils a series of latest military equipment in its drills.
