Iran, India to Discuss Closer Maritime Cooperation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A ranking military delegation from India will meet Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari on Thursday for talks on stronger naval ties with the Islamic Republic.

The Indian delegation is going to hold talks on expansion of friendly ties with Iran and enhancement of naval cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi, according to the Iranian Navy.

It will be the second meeting in six months between Iran’s Navy commander and an Indian military team.

In August 2015, and after a meeting with a top-ranking military delegation from India’s University of Strategic Sciences, Sayyari said Iran and India, as two influential countries in the region, can develop broad maritime relations with each other.

Sayyari also expressed the hope that Tehran and New Delhi would promote their relations to end trans-regional countries’ presence for safeguarding security in the northern part of the Indian Ocean.

In previous comments, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed his country’s enthusiasm for establishing a new era of relations with Iran.

Iran has already voiced preparedness to expand its collaborations with other countries in a bid to secure peace and stability in international waters.
