Azeri President Urges Tehran-Baku Cooperation on Border Security

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Republic of Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev called for closer cooperation between Azeri and Iranian border security forces against the common threats the two neighbors are facing.

The age-old and close interaction between border police forces of Azerbaijan and Iran should develop faster than before, President Aliyev said at a meeting with Commander of Iran’s Border Police Brigadier General Qassem Rezaei in Baku on Friday.

He insisted that the two countries’ police forces should keep such a close watch on the borders that nothing would upset security along the joint borders.

Elsewhere, Aliyev made a reference to his recent visit to Iran, and the signing of 12 agreements in the trip, stressing that bilateral ties are expanding rapidly in different areas.

For his part, the Iranian commander emphasized the significance of reciprocal visits by Iranian and Azeri high-ranking officials to forge stronger cooperation between their border security forces.

General Rezaei also highlighted Iran’s considerable efforts to fight narcotics trafficking in order to save the youth in all regional countries.

Heading a delegation, General Rezaei paid a three-day visit to the neighboring country at the invitation of Chief of the State Border Service of Azerbaijan Republic Lieutenant General Elchin Guliyev.

Besides bilateral talks with Azeri officials, the Iranian commander attended a trilateral meeting of border police commanders of Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan.
