President: Iran Keen to Enhance Ties with Belgium

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani voiced the country’s readiness to work with Belgian investment groups and entrepreneurs following the termination of anti-Iran sanctions under a lasting nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

“Tehran welcomes investors and entrepreneurs from Belgium’s government and private sectors for cooperation in the post-sanctions era,” President Rouhani said Saturday at a meeting with President of the Senate of Belgium Christine Defraigne in Tehran.

There exist no obstacles in the way of expansion of economic ties between Iran and Belgium, Rouhani added.

He said Tehran and Brussels can engage in joint economic activities for the benefit of the whole region.

Elsewhere in his remarks, President Rouhani called for concerted action to counter the threat of terrorism.

He also deplored Europe’s indifference to the acts of terrorism in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria in the past, saying that Europeans entered the war on terrorism only after they faced the threat in their countries.

For her part, the visiting senator expressed Belgium’s enthusiasm for opening a new chapter in relations with Iran in all areas of mutual interest.

She further hailed Iran as a factor behind stability in the region, saying Brussels supports Tehran in the fight against terrorism.

Heading a high-ranking parliamentary delegation, Defraigne arrived in Tehran on Wednesday, and met with a number of top officials.

The trip comes against a backdrop of international enthusiasm for enhanced ties with Iran after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached an agreement on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program and started implementing it on January 16.
