Supporting Kabul Government, Tehran’s Principled Policy: President Rouhani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reassured his Afghan counterpart that the Islamic Republic sticks to the policy of supporting the central government of neighboring Afghanistan.

In a telephone conversation with Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday, President Rouhani said Iran favors a stable Afghanistan that enjoys full security and moves toward a booming economy.

Voicing Tehran’s support for Afghanistan’s national unity government, the Iranian president also slammed terrorist and extremist groups as a threat not only to Afghanistan, but to the whole region.

He also stressed the need for attempts to stimulate economic ties between Tehran and Kabul by activating a joint economic commission.

Ghani, for his part, made it clear that Afghanistan is resolved to bolster cooperation with Iran in all fields.

Back in May, the Afghan president traveled to Iran to sign a trilateral agreement between Iran, Afghanistan and India on the establishment of an international transit corridor via the Iranian port city of Chabahar.

While in Tehran, Ghani had a meeting with President Rouhani, during which he voiced Kabul’s willingness to cement closer regional cooperation with Tehran.
