Iran Beats Japan at William Jones Basketball Cup

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran national basketball team defeated Japan 73-65 in the penultimate match of the 38th William Jones Cup on Saturday.

Defending champion Iran will play India in its last match on Sunday.

Iran started the tournament with a 73-61 win over Chinese Taipei B and defeated United States Sacramento State Hornets 70-59 and Egypt 74-65 respectively.

Afterward, Iran suffered three successive losses to South Korea (67-50), Chinese Taipei A (66-63) and Mighty Sports (80-73).
The competition started on July 23 at the Sinjhuang Gymasium in New Taipei City and will run until July 31.

The Iranian team is preparing for the 2016 FIBA Asia Challenge which is an international basketball tournament.

FIBA Asia will be hosted by Tehran, Iran, from September 9 to 18.

This tournament will serve as the first step in determining the process of the qualifiers for the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup which will feature teams from both FIBA Asia and FIBA Oceania for the first time.
