US Not Interested in Diplomatic Settlement of Syria Crisis: Military Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A Syrian military official said the US is not interested in the diplomatic resolution of the ongoing foreign-backed militancy in Syria.

Speaking to Tasnim on Thursday, Brigadier General Heysam Hasoon said, “The US is not after a political or diplomatic solution (to the crisis) in Syria.”

Referring to recent remarks by US officials, including Secretary of State John Kerry, that a recent ceasefire in Syria is “not dead” and the Syrian crisis will be only resolved through diplomatic means, he said such comments are made only because Washington is trying to stop the Syrian army’s advances and achievements in eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo.

Brigadier General Hasoon further stressed that the Syria truce failed to take hold because the US is seeking to save the terrorist groups that are now on the verge of collapse in the Arab country.

The recent ceasefire was brokered during talks on September 9 between Russia and the US. Both sides agreed to influence the Syrian government and the so-called moderate rebel forces to cease the hostilities. Both sides blamed each other for not fulfilling the agreement.

The agreement suffered a significant blow after US-led coalition forces bombed positions of the Syrian Arab Army in Deir ez-Zor on September 17, killing 90 and wounding over 100 soldiers. Days later, a UN humanitarian convoy was attacked in the province of Aleppo, with 21 people killed. No side claimed responsibility, with the US and western media quickly laying the blame on either Russian or Syrian air forces, despite no proof an actual airstrike took place.
