Bahraini Regime Revokes Nationality of 2 Other Dissidents

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Manama regime, in yet another attempt to silence the voices of dissent and crack down on the opposition, has stripped two other citizens of their citizenship, accusing them of carrying out terrorist acts.

A Bahraini judicial source announced on Thursday that a criminal court of the Arab country has sentenced two nationals to 10 years in prison and deprivation of their citizenship on charges of terrorism, Russian broadcaster RT Arabic reported.

The Al Khalifa regime is pressing ahead with its crackdown on opposition after it announced on June 20 that the citizenship of Sheikh Isa Qassim, the spiritual leader of Shiites in the Persian Gulf country, has been revoked.

Since 1980s, the ruling Al Khalifa regime has been trying to change the Kingdom’s demographic structure which largely consists of Shiites.

The European Union and the 35-member UN Human Rights Council earlier this month urged Bahrain to end its heavy-handed crackdown on political dissent.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations.

Amnesty International and many other international rights organizations have frequently censured the Bahraini regime for the rampant human rights abuses against opposition groups and anti-regime protesters.
