Syrian Army Advances in Terrorist-Held Areas near Capital

DAMASCUS (Tasnim) – Syrian army troops backed by allied forces managed to recapture more areas in the eastern and western suburbs of the capital, Damascus, from foreign-backed terrorist groups, local resources said.

According to Tasnim dispatches, the Syrian army forces advanced in areas near Duma, 10 km north-east of Damascus, with the support of National Defense Forces and cleared the districts from the terrorists.

Meanwhile, severe clashes erupted in al-Rayhan, Eastern Ghouta, between the Syrian security forces and members of the Jaysh al-Islam terrorist group.

During the clashes, the terrorists’ positions were targeted by heavy artillery fire, which killed all the militants, and their weapons cache in the area was also destroyed by Syrian air force fighter jets.

On another front, Syrian forces are busy fighting to recapture the northern city of Aleppo from terrorists. The security forces encircled Aleppo on July 17 after closing off the last terrorist-controlled route into the city.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
