Iranian President Congratulates Iraq’s New Prime Minister

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani congratulated Adel Abdul Mahdi on his election as the new prime minister of Iraq, hoping for closer bonds between the two nations during his term.

In a message to the new Iraqi prime minister on Sunday, Rouhani hoped for the expansion of the “age-old and friendly” ties between Tehran and Baghdad in the political, economic, and cultural fields in order to serve the interests of the two nations.

On September 2, Iraq’s parliament elected as president Kurdish politician Barham Salih, who immediately named Adel Abdul Mahdi prime minister-designate, ending months of deadlock after a national election in May.

Abdul Mahdi is a Shiite politician who served as vice president from 2005 to 2011.
