China's First Domestic Electric Aircraft Achieves Successful Maiden Flight

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – China marked a significant milestone as its domestically developed electric airplane, the AG60E, completed its inaugural flight from Jiande Qiandaohu Airport in Zhejiang Province.

The AG60E, an electrically modified version of the AG60 aircraft, took off and landed at Jiande Qiandaohu Airport during its maiden test flight, showcasing its capabilities as a two-seat, single-engine, light-weight aircraft designed primarily for civilian use in flight training, agricultural surveys, and aerial sightseeing.

With dimensions measuring 6.9 meters in length and an 8.6-meter wingspan, the AG60E boasts a maximum cruising speed of 185kph, representing a significant leap in electric aviation technology, as reported by China Daily and Xinhua. The development of this electric variant aligns with strategic goals to bolster emerging industries, according to the manufacturer.

Electric aircraft, powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and electric motors, stand out for their zero-carbon-emission output, a notable shift away from traditional jet fuel. Besides lithium-ion batteries, these planes might explore alternative power sources like solar energy or hybrid models that combine electric and combustion engines.

Rolls Royce launched what it described as the world’s fastest all-electric plane in 2021. Global high-tech startup AutoFlight, which started in China and has manufacturing and test facilities in Shanghai, has been working on an electric, vertical take-off and landing aircraft. Europe’s Airbus has also been running electric flight projects since 2010.
