Iranian, Qatari FMs Converse Ahead of AFC Asian Cup Semifinal

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The foreign ministers of Iran and Qatar held a telephone conversation a day before a crucial match between their national football teams in the second 2023 AFC Asian Cup semifinal in Qatar.

In their telephone conversation on Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani expressed their best wishes for the success of the national football teams of their respective countries during the Iran-Qatar match in the AFC Cup semifinal, slated for Wednesday evening.

They also talked about the latest developments in the region and Palestine.

The course of efforts and political movements to halt the war against Gaza, as well as the proposed initiatives for establishing a ceasefire, exchange of prisoners, and sending shipments of international humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, were discussed in the conversation.

Iran, backed by their thousands of vociferous supporters, knocked out Japan on Saturday and earned a spot in the semifinals of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup with a 2-1 win.

Qatar also won a quarterfinal victory against Uzbekistan on Saturday.

The winner of today’s semifinal will have to face off Jordan in the final match.
